Chickens

Housing is important and should provide protection not only from weather conditions but also from predators. Adequate perches and nesting boxes should also be provided.

Chickens should be provided with good quality pellets. Green feed and scraps should only be a portion of their daily diet because if they are not on a good quality feed, egg production will reduce and habits such as egg eating may start. Oyster shell grit is a good source of extra calcium that is needed for shell production.

Hens do require parasite treatment, however, it is important to remember that depending on the treatment given, eggs should not be used for human consumption for a period after treatment due to residues being present.
